My Little Invalid

Last Saturday, the 3rd of May (see how I put that in there for later scrapbooking reference) Marissa had a big first: stitches! She cut her toe open on, of all things, the bottom of a bathroom scale, and cut right through her toenail and everything.

The Stats:

Hours in hospital - 3.5
Cuddles in waiting room - countless
weight in pounds - 23
oral medicines - 1
topical creams - 2
injections of freezing - 2
people to hold her down - 4
stitches - 4
toe nails left - 9.25
stickers earned - 1
stuffed ducks she got to take home - 1
ice cream scoops at home - 1
seeing Marissa doped up on a sedative - priceless

Seriously, it was the funniest thing. They gave her some sedative, and about half an hour later she started getting loopy. First she was just giggly. I asked her if she was feeling dopey and she just giggled and giggled. She lost her balance completely. Sitting up on the bed between mom and I, she would just start to weeble like a wobble, except then she did fall right over and crashed into mom. For a while she laid on the bed, holding her foot up in the air, staring at her disected toe and chuckling.

All in all, it was not too terrible an experience. Marissa was not a fan of being held down, but hey, I don't think I would be either, and she was a real trooper.

Anybody want to see pictures of her toe 3 days later? (yeah, you knew I took some!)

I do have to say a great big thank you to Grandma for taking us to the hospital. Thankfully mom was at our house and she gave us a ride so that I could ride in the back and hold onto Marissa's foot. I would have hated to have to just stick her in her carseat and drive there, even though it's not so very far. Mom also went home to get Marissa a diaper when we realized she probably wasn't going to make it through a hospital trip at naptime without a trip to the potty. And she called Josh to keep him updated, and offered to watch Bria if he wanted to come be with Marissa. I know everyone thinks their mom is the best, but I'm the only one who's right about that!

Oh, and Rissa also learned to say Grandma Dodie while we were there, but she just says"DoDoo." It's very cute, and makes more sense than "Blahblah" which is what Bria called her!
